As Anna was working, she heard the familiar ping of the dialogue box again. Hou Yi had sent her another message.
‘Anna, you were right. Lawyer Mei and Supervisor An both searched your details on the internet. The former made a call, and the latter sent a text message. We can’t determine who the call was made to or who the text message was sent to, but I’ve sent one of the bodyguards down into the legal research area. If needed, they’ll come straight in.’
Anna sighed, her suspicions confirmed. She quickly typed a response, not allowing the alarm in her mind to distract her from the task at hand.
‘OK, I need to focus on this work. Just let me know if anything happens. I’ll keep an eye on the situation here.’
She quickly shifted her focus back to the legal programs and her emails. But the weight of the situation was pressing on her. The people in this office were clearly not what they appeared to be. From the receptionist’s suspicious behavior to the actions of Lawyer Mei and Supervisor An, it was clear that something was happening under the surface. Anna wasn’t sure how far this conspiracy went, but she knew she couldn’t afford to let her guard down.
As she reviewed the emails, she made a few notes, trying to piece together the information she had. The message Hou Yi sent about the surveillance system added another layer to the complexity of the situation. She had to be careful. She couldn’t let her every move be tracked, and yet, she had to stay on top of everything.
About 15 minutes later, Hou Yi messaged her again.
‘Anna, just a heads-up: Lawyer Mei and Supervisor An are acting suspicious. Lawyer Mei is looking at something on his phone, and Supervisor An is speaking quietly to one of the other women. It’s clear they’re trying to figure out who you are and what you’re really doing here.’
Anna’s fingers hovered over the keyboard as she considered how to respond. She didn’t want to tip her hand too early, but she couldn’t afford to wait passively either.
‘I’m aware. I think it’s likely that they’ve already contacted the Lu family. I’m not sure how soon they’ll make a move, but they’ll probably act quickly. I’m going to stick to my plan and see how they react. If they’re really spies, it’ll come out soon enough.’
‘Be careful. I’ll keep an eye on things, but stay alert. Let me know if you need backup.’
‘Will do.’
The conversation with Hou Yi gave her the mental boost she needed. She had to keep her focus sharp. She quickly scrolled through her notes and reviewed the documents she had pulled up earlier, trying to make sense of them. The legal work wasn’t particularly difficult, but her mind kept wandering back to the situation in the building. If someone in the legal department was indeed spying for the Lu family, it was only a matter of time before they tried to make their move.
But as she worked, Anna couldn’t help but think about the larger picture. She knew the risks. This was about more than just legal matters—it was about power, control, and survival. If she could expose the spies and use them against the Lu family, it would give Hou Yi the upper hand. But the question was: could she get the information she needed without revealing too much too soon?
Her phone vibrated on the desk, snapping her back to the present. It was another message from Hou Yi.
‘Anna, the bodyguard is in position. Lawyer Mei and Supervisor An are both on high alert. It looks like they’ve been talking about you. We’re moving to the next stage soon. Let me know if you need anything.’
She hesitated for a moment before typing her reply.
‘I’m fine for now. Keep monitoring, and if anything changes, let me know.’
She paused, staring at the screen. Do you want to deal with them? The question echoed in her mind. She didn’t have all the answers yet, but she knew she couldn’t just wait for them to make their move. She needed to act. The game was on, and it was only a matter of time before she would have to face the consequences of the moves she made today.
And she would deal with them—one way or another.
