Chapter 44 I Will Set Up A Studio
Christina took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing thoughts. She had never been the type to shy away from confrontation, but this was different. Nathaniel wasn’t just annoyed—he was genuinely upset, and it was slowly starting to wear her down.
“I know it’s your way of helping, Nathaniel,” she said softly, her voice tinged with exhaustion. “But you can’t just decide everything for me. I have my own life, my own career, and my own goals. It’s not about making my dreams a reality the way you think is best. It’s about me figuring out what I want and working toward that in my own way.”
Nathaniel’s expression softened for a brief moment, but it quickly hardened again as he stepped closer to her. “I know what’s best for you. You’re my wife, Christina. I don’t want you to be hurt or taken advantage of. I want to protect you.”
She could hear the sincerity in his voice, and for a moment, it made her heart ache. But she had to push those feelings aside. “I appreciate that, but I don’t need protection from everything, Nathaniel. I’m not some fragile thing that needs to be sheltered. I’m perfectly capable of handling myself.”
His face fell at her words, and the distance between them seemed to grow even wider. “So, what, you want me to stop caring about you? Just let you go off on your own and deal with things on your own?”
Christina shook her head, her eyes glistening with frustration. “It’s not about that! It’s about trust. You keep telling me what you think is best for me, but you’re not asking what I want. You’re not listening to me, and it feels like you’re treating me like I’m not capable of making my own decisions.”
There was a long silence as Nathaniel absorbed her words. She could see the wheels turning in his mind, and she waited for him to say something—anything—that might indicate he understood her point of view.
Finally, Nathaniel exhaled sharply, his shoulders slumping. “I… I guess I’ve been so focused on trying to protect you that I didn’t stop to think about what you actually want. I don’t want to control you, Christina. I want us to be a team. But sometimes, it’s hard for me to let go.”
Christina’s gaze softened as she reached out, placing a hand on his arm. “I know you care, and I care about you too. But we need to find a balance. I can’t keep living in a world where I’m constantly being told what to do, even by someone who loves me.”
Nathaniel nodded slowly, his hand coming up to gently hold hers. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I’ve been too caught up in trying to fix everything for you. I just want to make things easier for you… but I’ll try to respect your space more.”
Christina gave him a small smile, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. “That’s all I need from you—respect and understanding. I’m not going anywhere. But I also need the freedom to make my own choices, even if they’re not the ones you would choose.”
Nathaniel finally cracked a smile, a hint of relief in his eyes. “I can do that. I’ll try to stop micromanaging your life.” He pulled her into a hug, his arms wrapping around her protectively, but this time, it didn’t feel like control—it felt like love.
As they stood there, Christina couldn’t help but feel hopeful. It wasn’t going to be easy, but maybe—just maybe—they could figure this out together. She wasn’t sure what the future held, but for the first time in a long while, she felt like they were on the same page.
