Chapter 48 How About Moving Back
Christina nearly choked on her sip of wine at the unexpected question, her hand freezing mid-air. Her mind immediately raced, and she put her glass down, trying to hide the surprise that flashed across her face.
Move back to Scenic Garden Manor? After everything that had happened, after the tension with Julia, and the emotional rollercoaster she’d been on, the idea of returning to the place where they had once lived together was both foreign and tempting.
The air in the conference room felt thick, the hum of the overhead lights seemingly magnified as her thoughts collided.
“I—” she began, but the words faltered before she could continue.
Nathaniel, sensing her hesitation, leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving her face. His gaze was intense, yet gentle, a silent understanding passing between them.
“I’m not asking you to move back to avoid my mother or anything like that,” he continued, his voice quieter now. “I just… I want you to be with me, Christina. Without all the pressure, without all the complications. I’ve been thinking about this for a while now.”
Christina’s heart beat a little faster at the sincerity in his tone. She had never seen him so vulnerable, so unguarded.
“But… What about your mother? She’ll just make things harder,” she finally said, her voice thick with uncertainty. She hadn’t even begun to process what it would mean to live under the same roof with Nathaniel again, not when Julia was bound to make her life miserable.
“I’m not asking you to go through that alone,” Nathaniel reassured her. “I’ll handle her. You don’t have to worry about her anymore, Christina. I’ve had enough of her controlling everything. This time, I’m choosing us.”
Her eyes met his, and for the first time, she saw that he truly meant it. There was no trace of the cold, aloof CEO, no distant heir to the Hadley fortune. Just Nathaniel. The man who had been by her side through so much.
Christina’s pulse quickened, and she had to fight the wave of emotions that swelled up inside her. Part of her wanted to say yes, to leap into this opportunity to be closer to him, to leave behind the baggage and uncertainties. But another part of her held back, reminding her of the complexity of their lives, of the sacrifices they would both have to make.
“I don’t know if I’m ready for that,” she admitted softly, her gaze shifting downward. “It’s not just about you and me, Nathaniel. It’s about everything that comes with it. Your family, the business… I don’t want to complicate things more than they already are.”
Nathaniel reached across the table, his hand covering hers with a firmness that belied his usual easy demeanor. His thumb traced a soft, reassuring pattern on her knuckles.
“It won’t be easy, I know,” he said, his voice thick with resolve. “But if we keep letting other people control our decisions, we’ll never get anywhere. I want this, Christina. I want you. And I want us to be a team, no matter what comes our way.”
Christina swallowed hard, her emotions a mix of desire and hesitation. His words stirred something deep inside her, something she had been trying to ignore. The truth was, she had missed him more than she cared to admit. More than she had even allowed herself to feel.
Her lips parted as if to speak, but before she could voice her thoughts, the door to the conference room opened. Sebastian entered, giving them both a polite nod before setting down a small stack of paperwork in front of Nathaniel.
“I’ll leave you two to finish,” he said quietly before retreating.
Christina and Nathaniel exchanged a glance, the moment temporarily interrupted. But as the door clicked shut behind Sebastian, the air between them grew still again.
“I want to be with you,” Christina finally said, her voice trembling with the weight of her own realization. “But it’s so complicated. You and I… we’re both part of two different worlds. And sometimes, it feels like I’m drowning in all of it.”
Nathaniel didn’t pull away. Instead, he gave her hand a soft squeeze. “I know it’s hard. But nothing that’s worth it is ever easy. If it were, we wouldn’t value it as much.”
She looked up at him, her gaze steady now. “What if I make things harder for you? What if my past… and everything I bring with me, is too much for us to handle?”
Nathaniel’s eyes darkened with a quiet intensity. “Then we’ll face it together,” he said, his voice thick with determination. “And we’ll figure it out. As long as we’re in this together, there’s nothing we can’t handle.”
Christina’s breath caught in her throat, a mix of warmth and fear swirling inside her. It was tempting. More than tempting. It felt like a promise of something she’d been longing for, a future that didn’t seem as out of reach as it had once been.
But even as she felt herself inching toward him, toward this new life, the weight of her doubts held her back. Was she ready to let go of her reservations? To step fully into Nathaniel’s world and all the challenges that came with it?
The question hung in the air, unspoken, as she tried to make sense of the emotions coursing through her. Finally, she stood up, her chair scraping lightly against the floor.
“I’ll think about it,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “I need time.”
Nathaniel didn’t push. He simply nodded, the understanding between them palpable. “Take all the time you need, Christina. I’ll be here when you’re ready.”
Christina offered him a small smile, one that felt like both a promise and a question. As she turned to leave, her mind was still a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions, but one thing was certain: for the first time, she felt like she might be ready to embrace whatever came next—with him.
