Chapter 47 I Misplaced My Phone
Christina’s chest tightened at Julia’s words, her blood boiling. The nerve of the woman! She wanted to fire back with all her fury, to remind her of her place, but Nathaniel’s protective stance behind her made her pause.
He stood there, his posture stiff and unyielding, as if he were daring his mother to challenge him further. Christina could feel the subtle tension in the air between them, thick and suffocating.
“Stop,” Nathaniel’s voice rang out, deep and commanding. He turned his head slightly, his eyes filled with quiet authority. “I’ve had enough of this. This is between Christina and me. You have no right to insult her, and certainly not in my presence.”
Julia’s face turned a deep shade of red. For the first time in all these years, Nathaniel’s tone was colder, harsher, like a glacier slowly cracking beneath the pressure of its own weight.
“I won’t let you talk to her like that.” His words were sharp, every syllable deliberate.
Julia sputtered, her anger giving way to a feeling of betrayal. She had always thought of Nathaniel as her son—her prized possession. But in that moment, he wasn’t the son she had molded him to be. Instead, he was standing between her and the woman she so despised.
Christina’s hands clenched at her sides, her nails digging into her palms. She could feel the heat of the moment rise, the indignity of Julia’s accusations threatening to unravel everything. But then, she took a deep breath and stepped forward, her voice cutting through the tension.
“Enough, Julia.” Her words were calm but firm, her eyes steady. “I’ve had enough of your insults. And as for your opinion about me—about what you think I am and who I am—quite frankly, I don’t care.”
Julia recoiled as though slapped. The confidence Christina had gained in the past few moments was enough to rattle her, but she quickly regained her composure.
“You really think Nathaniel will stand by you forever? You’re nothing but a stepping stone in his life, Christina. A temporary arrangement,” Julia sneered, her words laced with venom. “You were never meant to be a part of this family.”
Christina’s heart pounded, but her voice didn’t falter. She glanced back at Nathaniel, meeting his gaze. His presence was like a shield, a constant support that bolstered her resolve.
“That’s where you’re wrong.” Christina’s voice softened, but the weight of her words hung heavy in the air. “I’m not just a stepping stone. I’m not going anywhere. And neither is Nathaniel.”
She turned back to face Julia, standing tall. “You can try to tear us apart, but it won’t work. Because what we have is real. And that’s something you’ll never understand.”
For a moment, there was silence. Julia’s eyes burned with rage, but she was too shocked by Christina’s boldness to respond immediately.
Nathaniel stepped forward then, standing beside Christina, his presence an undeniable force. “You heard her, Mom,” he said, his voice unwavering. “I’ve had enough of this. Christina and I are together, and that’s not going to change.”
Julia opened her mouth to argue, but Nathaniel held up a hand, silencing her.
“I won’t tolerate this anymore,” he said coldly. “If you can’t respect my choices, then you’ll have to leave.”
With that, Julia’s face twisted in disgust, but she turned on her heel and stormed out of the room.
As soon as the door slammed shut behind her, Christina felt the tension leave her body. She exhaled a long breath, finally realizing how much she had been holding in.
Nathaniel turned to her, his expression softening. “Are you okay?”
Christina looked up at him, her heart still racing from the confrontation. “I’m fine,” she said, though her voice was still a little shaky. “I just… I didn’t expect her to come here like that.”
Nathaniel placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch warm and comforting. “I’m sorry you had to deal with her. I should’ve told her to stay away, but I didn’t realize how far she’d go.”
Christina shook her head, a small smile tugging at the corner of her lips. “It’s not your fault. I’m just… tired of her trying to control everything.”
“You’re not alone in this, Christina,” Nathaniel said quietly, his gaze never leaving hers. “We’re in this together. No one is going to come between us—not her, not anyone.”
Her chest tightened again, but this time it wasn’t from anger. It was from something deeper—something raw and vulnerable. For the first time, Christina truly felt like she wasn’t fighting alone. That whatever came next, Nathaniel would be by her side.
“I know,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “And for once, I believe it.”
Nathaniel smiled, his fingers gently brushing her cheek. “Good. Because I’m not going anywhere.”
In that moment, everything shifted. The chaos of the past few days, the tension with Julia, and all the uncertainty in their lives seemed to fade away. All that remained was this quiet certainty between them—the knowledge that, no matter what came next, they would face it together.
And for Christina, that was enough.
