Chapter 39
Cordelia walked over slowly from the side, looking calm and composed. Marcus finally understood her plan. She had recorded solid evidence of the bullying, and since the students were over 16 years old, they could face legal charges. If the video was handed to the police and a court case was brought up, these students would have criminal records for life.
Cordelia looked at them coldly. “Carter isn’t the only one you guys bully, huh?” she spoke confidently. “I’ve already called the police. They’ll investigate when they arrive.”
Everything was going according to plan.
The students were eventually taken away by the police and interrogated. They confessed to their bullying, and the charges went through without issue. The outcome was satisfying. Cordelia had finally avenged Carter.
“Z, your wife’s pretty amazing,” Fredric, who had connections at the police station, said with admiration after hearing the news.
“She’s more level-headed than you and knows the law. This was executed excellently!” Marcus chuckled, impressed by his wife’s resourcefulness. Still, he couldn’t help but think… he had contributed too, even if not in a glorious way. After all, he was the one who had beaten up the kids.
Given Cordelia’s character, he expected some kind of reward—or at least a hearty meal. But nothing. She had grown colder towards him recently, no longer bringing up the idea of sleeping in the same room. Marcus had tried to hint at it a few times, but Cordelia acted oblivious, offering up various excuses.
So, he continued to sleep on the couch.
Marcus sighed deeply, lost in thought, his frown etched on his face. He didn’t even notice his cigarette was burning down.
“Yo, Z!” Josiah quickly snatched the cigarette from his hand. Marcus snapped back to reality.
This was the first time Josiah had seen Marcus so lost in thought. “What are you thinking about?” he asked, waving a hand in front of him. “Oh, by the way, news from Centrolis. Hah… your second uncle told your grandfather to pick a wife for you!”
Marcus’ gaze darkened, and he snubbed the cigarette in the ashtray with a stern look.
“Those people in your family? Troublemakers,” Fredric said in concern. “If you go back one day… Cordelia…”
“She won’t be with me,” Marcus replied, his voice low. “We’re from two different worlds. It’s impossible for us to blend.”
Fredric and Josiah paused, exchanging a look. Even a fool could see that Marcus had feelings for Cordelia, but he refused to admit it, continually insisting that his marriage was just a disguise—that he only felt responsible for her as a spouse.
It was clear he was lying to himself, but Cordelia had already wormed her way into his heart. When the day would come that they had to part, he couldn’t imagine how he would endure the pain of letting her go.
After a long pause, Marcus suddenly asked, “Do you know any ob-gyn doctors you’re familiar with?”
Josiah and Fredric stared at him in shock, wide-eyed as if they had seen a ghost.
“W-What?” Josiah wanted to laugh but stopped himself. Scanning Marcus from head to toe, he raised an eyebrow and exclaimed, “Z! My man! She’s pregnant already?!”
Marcus scowled and rolled his eyes.
Fredric furrowed his brows. “Can you let him finish first?”
Marcus cleared his throat and said, “I just wanted to ask about what’s good for women’s health.”
Josiah couldn’t hold it in any longer and burst out laughing, spraying whatever he was drinking.
Fredric shook his head, looking at him like he was a fool.
Marcus’ glower deepened.
Lately, the way Cordelia looked at him seemed doubtful and dejected. She had been moody, but he couldn’t recall what he had done wrong or what misunderstanding had occurred. That morning, when he saw sanitary pads in the bathroom, it had crossed his mind…
