Chapter 66
The corners of Marcus’ lips twitched as he sensed Cordelia’s concern. She worried that Marcus had teamed up with some shady people from his past, using dubious methods to pressure William into buying the house for her. Even if they succeeded now, she feared there would be endless trouble later on. She didn’t want Marcus to get into any more unnecessary trouble.
“Are you worried about me?” Marcus asked, his gaze deep yet his smile carefree. “Don’t worry. It’s all legitimate. I promised you I wouldn’t get into trouble, and I will keep that promise.”
“But someone like my father…” Cordelia started, her voice tinged with doubt.
“I got a lawyer,” Marcus said casually. “I met him when I was in jail. He often helps inmates with legal matters. He’s a good guy and has helped me a lot since I got out.”
“Oh, I see.” Cordelia finally relaxed. “Then we should thank him properly! Why don’t we invite him home for a meal?”
“No need for now. Mr. Constable is busy. Maybe next time, when he’s free.”
Cordelia nodded, carefully holding onto the property deed. Marcus wrapped his arms around her from behind, his body close to hers. They hadn’t had much intimate time recently, with Marcus being preoccupied with family matters. Now, with the moon high in the sky and a cool breeze sweeping through the room, her sweet fragrance seemed to pull him in.
Marcus was entranced, resting his chin on her shoulder and planting soft kisses on her neck. Just as he moved to take things further, Cordelia gently tugged him away, smiling awkwardly.
“Don’t… It’s not a good time today.”
“What’s not a good time?” Marcus asked, his voice low.
“Uh…” Cordelia blushed. “I have a stomachache.”
Her words hit Marcus like a bucket of cold water. Slowly, he pulled back, his face a mixture of frustration and reluctance.
Cordelia stifled a laugh and leaned in to peck his cheek. “Consider this your compensation, okay?”
“That’s all?” Marcus feigned seriousness. “It’s too light. I don’t see any sincerity.”
“I’m afraid that you won’t be able to control yourself if I’m too sincere. You’d be the one frustrated then, right?” Cordelia teased.
Marcus looked at her, mesmerized by her mischievous sparkle. She was more endearing and playful than her usual quiet, docile self. She had this ability to keep him on his toes, drawing him back again and again.
Despite the temptation, Marcus held himself back. Letting out a long sigh, he lay down on the bed, pulling her close and burying his face in her chest.
Cordelia giggled at the motion, running her fingers through his hair, and softly urged him to sleep.
“Can’t sleep,” he murmured, his voice husky. “Why do you still have your period?”
“What’s so strange about it?” Cordelia responded, looking at him. “Once a month. Very punctual.”
“I worked so hard last month. Shouldn’t you already be pregnant by now?” Marcus teased, a grin tugging at his lips.
Cordelia’s cheeks flushed, burning with embarrassment. “What are you talking about!?” She turned her back to him, hiding her face. “Getting pregnant isn’t something that happens just like that.”
“Mm, that’s also true. Go with the flow…” Marcus replied, his palm gently resting on her stomach, his serious expression making her smile.
“Honey,” she asked softly, “Do you really want a baby?”
“You don’t?” he asked, surprised.
“Not for now.” Cordelia furrowed her brows, but her frown quickly softened.
Cordelia pouted and muttered to herself, “It’s too expensive to raise a child nowadays. Not only do we have to give birth and raise them, but we also have to educate them and plan for their future. I don’t think I’m ready for that yet.”
She looked up at him, a glint of shyness in her eyes. “Besides… I want to spend more time with just you.”
Her smile deepened, her dimples showing as she spoke, adding sweetness to the moment.
