Chapter 92
“That’s right. There’s a chance that this fellow has taken some forbidden drugs. That’s why he performed so well in the first few rounds. Now that the effect of the drugs has worn off, he’s starting to lose it.” The suspicion in Oliver’s eyes grew stronger.
Josiah and Fredric were sweating for Marcus. Josiah couldn’t hold himself back anymore and shouted, “What’s going on with Z?”
Fredric pushed him back down on his seat and scanned the room for Oliver. “Keep your voice down!” he warned. “I’m sure Z has his own reasons for doing this. Just stop yelling!”
“Could it be because Cordelia isn’t here to watch him?”
Just as Josiah finished speaking, a gasp rose from the crowd. Marcus was now kneeling on the ground, one hand clutching his lower left rib cage, sweat mixed with blood dripping down his forehead.
“Marcus…” Cordelia returned to the hall and froze at the sight. In her memory, Marcus had always been a winner in every fight. She had never seen him so beaten.
Tears welled up in her eyes as panic overtook her. She rushed toward the ring, but a security guard blocked her path. She shouted with all her might, but the noise of the crowd drowned her out.
Cordelia didn’t know how she made it through the rest of the match. She couldn’t bear to look at the ring. It wasn’t until the referee blew the whistle and announced the winner that she rushed to the back.
“Don’t worry, Cordelia!” Seth reassured her. “Judging by what I know about Marcus, he has a strong physique, so he should be fine.”
“Dr. Stafford, please…” Cordelia’s face was pale, her eyes clouded with tears. “I’m really scared…”
“It’s okay! Take me to the back.”
Meanwhile, Oliver and two others were heading backstage as well.
“Mr. Jones, is this necessary?” one of them asked.
“Yes!” Oliver’s face darkened. “Dr. Robinson, did you bring everything with you?”
“Yes, but—”
“Try to get close to him later. We must get something from him so we can do the DNA analysis.”
Dr. Robinson frowned but nodded in agreement.
Oliver still didn’t believe that the man in the ring was Marcus, despite Matthew telling him multiple times that Zephyr was in Chaiseland. The man in the ring, acting cowardly and wimpy, didn’t resemble Zephyr in the slightest.
As they rushed toward the back, they collided with Cordelia and Seth in the dressing room.
“Mr. Jones?” Cordelia’s heart skipped a beat, but she quickly composed herself. “What are you doing here?”
The corner of Oliver’s mouth twitched as he gave an awkward smile. “I… I’m pretty interested in boxing, so I bought a ticket and came to watch the match. I didn’t expect one of the contestants to be your husband!”
“Yeah,” Cordelia nodded.
She was about to enter, but Oliver stopped her.
“Ms. Jenner, it seems to me that your husband is pretty seriously injured. My friend here is a doctor. Why don’t you let him take a look at your husband?”
“That’s not necessary,” Cordelia rejected the offer. She raised an eyebrow and looked at him. “I didn’t know you’d need a doctor while watching a boxing match, Mr. Jones. I guess I’ve learned something new about you today.”
Oliver was caught off guard and speechless.
“My husband doesn’t like people he doesn’t know getting near him,” Cordelia continued. “This mister here is a doctor as well, and he’s a friend of my husband. I’m sure he’ll take care of him.”
“Ms. Jenner—”
“Thank you for your concern, Mr. Jones,” Cordelia said firmly, standing in front of the door. “But my husband doesn’t need your help right now, so please leave.”
