Chapter 42
Not only did Linda’s expression change, but the way she looked at Cordelia did as well. She genuinely had not considered that possibility! If she were Michael, she would certainly take it personally. After all, she was no saintess.
“Looks like I still lack the most basic judgment of people!” Linda chuckled. “Cordelia, I didn’t expect you to be so sound in logic when you’re always so quiet!”
“My judgment might not be right either.” Cordelia chuckled. “But Marcus told me that I can’t let my guard down. He’s asked me to keep an eye on everything I do. He also said that those in higher ranks had a tough time getting there, so they aren’t as simple as they seem.”
“Oh, your husband became your mentor now, huh?”
It was meant to be a tease from Linda, but Cordelia couldn’t stop herself from showing off her husband.
“Of course! Marcus knows a lot!” Cordelia beamed. “Linda, I always see him browsing foreign sites, you know? He knows several foreign languages and keeps up with politics and the economy!”
“What?” Linda was astonished.
When she had first met Marcus, she had assumed he was some impressive figure, judging by the powerful presence and pressure he exuded, not knowing about his past involvement in a fight that had led to time behind bars.
“Cordelia, how much do you really know about your husband?”
Cordelia was taken aback. “Why are you asking this?”
Linda chuckled. “Just chatting. I’m curious about him when you make him sound so amazing!”
Cordelia giggled without thinking too much about it, but now that she considered it, she didn’t know much about Marcus. She only knew about his “glorious past” and that he had no family.
The next day…
When Cordelia went to work, Michael called her into his office.
Cordelia felt a surge of nerves, but Michael greeted her with a warm smile and even asked his secretary to bring her coffee. He sat across from her, studying her in silence.
“So, you’re Cordelia.” Michael chuckled. “I’ve heard there’s a talented person in the sales department, sealing deals with Mr. Sean within her second month here, and I’ve always wanted to meet you. My wish is finally fulfilled today!”
“You’ve flattered me, Mr. Johnson.” Cordelia placed her coffee down and remained composed. “You can actually see me anytime, Mr. Johnson. But you’re usually busy, and my sales aren’t really that outstanding in the department.”
Michael squinted, studying her from head to toe again.
Cordelia wasn’t just a pretty face—she knew how to speak. With just a few words, she managed to flatter his ego and keep a low profile about her achievements. She was truly a talented individual. No wonder his niece, Karine, was so opposed to her.
Despite all this, it was a time when the company needed talented people. It would be a loss if they let someone like her go. They could pick on Cordelia whenever they wanted, but they couldn’t do it publicly. She had to suffer, but in the eyes of others, it would look like the company and its superior were simply appreciating her talents. Only then would their goal be accomplished.
Michael stroked his gold ring with a sly smirk.
“Cordelia, I asked to see you today because I have a task for you.”
Cordelia looked up at him.
“The company’s been planning to enter the Centrolis market for years,” Michael continued, “but it hasn’t been easy. Supply has always exceeded demand. Everyone wants in, and our company doesn’t have any unique strength, so we’ve been watching others profit.”
He paused briefly, then added, “Now that two seniors in the sales department left and took many clients with them, it’s tougher for us.”
“We shareholders have discussed it and decided to promote capable young people.”
Cordelia frowned slightly as her heart raced.
Michael smiled at her with a complex gaze. “Cordelia, we unanimously agree that you’re the perfect fit for this role.”
“Mr. Johnson, you mean…”
“Those who are capable do more,” Michael replied. “You’re the best person to explore Centrolis…”
