Chapter 85
Fredric stared at Marcus in disbelief, his eyes wide in shock, but no words came to him. Marcus’s cold gaze seemed to penetrate through him.
“Karine must have made a lot of preparations before making her move,” Fredric murmured, his voice low. “She colluded with the other company and destroyed the only video that could prove Cordelia’s innocence. She has all the evidence on her side, so… I’m afraid Cordelia has to be the scapegoat this time.”
Marcus’s glare deepened, and Fredric quickly added, “But believe me, Z, I’ll find other evidence to prove her innocence!”
Without a word, Marcus stood up and walked into the room, his movements gentle. Cordelia was sound asleep, her body wrapped in the warmth of his pillows. Her face was slightly flushed, a sign of her exhaustion, and she clutched the pillow close to her chest.
Marcus kissed her forehead softly, his lips curling into a faint smile, before turning back toward the living room.
“It’ll be too late by the time you find evidence!” Marcus’s expression shifted to one of cold determination as he stepped out of the room, locking eyes with Fredric. “You must get this done immediately! Since they’ve accused Cordelia of selling the company’s proprietary secrets, we start there!”
Fredric blinked in confusion. “What do you mean, Z?”
“For others, those might be secrets. But for people in the company, they are not secrets at all.” Marcus’s words were sharp, cutting through the tension.
Fredric’s jaw dropped. “What?”
“We’re going to merge the two companies,” Marcus declared, his voice cold and calculated.
Fredric stood frozen, speechless.
“If we merge the two companies, it won’t count as proprietary information leakage. Besides, we’ll need to streamline and get rid of some excess people during the merger.” Marcus’s lips curled into a sly smile. “I’m sure you understand what I mean, right?”
Fredric’s mind raced. He wanted to respond, but no words seemed to come out. Finally, he gave Marcus a thumbs-up and chuckled. “Z, that’s truly brilliant.”
“But it won’t be easy to merge two companies, so…” Fredric trailed off, his voice full of doubt.
“I’ll leave it to you,” Marcus replied casually, walking toward the kitchen and effortlessly putting on an apron.
Fredric’s mouth twitched in surprise. Merging two companies and dealing with Karine wasn’t the difficult part—it was the inevitable attention that would follow. What if someone came after them? Fredric couldn’t help but feel like Marcus had lost his mind. He would do anything for Cordelia, no matter the cost.
Lost in thought, Fredric was startled by a smell coming from the kitchen. “He… He’s cooking!?” he thought, his mind racing in disbelief.
“If you don’t have anything else to tell me, you should leave now. I’m not preparing dinner for you,” Marcus called out from the kitchen, his voice slightly amused. He walked into the living room, carrying a plate of spaghetti. Rolling his eyes at Fredric, he made his way toward the bedroom.
Fredric’s face contorted as he watched Marcus lovingly wake Cordelia and hold her gently. He had always expected others to serve him meals, but now he was the one serving her. With a tender smile, Marcus blew on the spaghetti to cool it and fed it to Cordelia, his expression full of affection.
“Isn’t this good? Did I improve?” Marcus asked, like a child seeking praise.
Fredric couldn’t bear to watch anymore. He quickly left the house, suddenly not feeling hungry at all. It was still early, and he decided to head back to his firm to figure out how to merge the two companies.
