Chapter 13

“You’ll see that I’m innocent, Abel!” Emmeline shouted, her voice laced with desperation.

“Get out!” Abel snapped.

The guards dragged her downstairs like a criminal, their grip tight as Alana watched with a self-satisfied smirk on her face. It seemed everything was falling into place for her.

Emergency services arrived soon after. Paramedics rushed to resuscitate Oscar, who had been left in a comatose state. CPR was performed, and he was quickly transported to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Emmeline was placed in a temporary detention center, her fate now out of her hands.

Not long after, Benjamin arrived, accompanied by Police Chief Derrick Campbell. They escorted Emmeline into the chief’s office.

Once the door closed behind them, Chief Campbell unclipped the handcuffs from her wrists.

“Lady, can you not screw with the Rykers? How am I supposed to hold them off?” Derrick sighed, clearly frustrated.

Emmeline calmly sipped tea, her expression cool. “I told them I wasn’t the culprit. I already guessed who did it.”

“There are no surveillance cameras in the bedroom,” Derrick said, his voice grim. “You left your fingerprints on the scene. Your guesses don’t matter.”

Emmeline leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs. “What’s so hard about it? Send me back to the detention center. They’ll come begging soon enough.”

Derrick shook his head, unconvinced. “I know you’re little miss amazing, but I don’t see how the Rykers are going to beg you. All I know is they’re seeking legal advice to charge you with murder and make sure you get the death penalty!”

“I told you I’m going back to the detention center,” she replied, her tone flat. “Are you going to keep rambling?”

“Are you sulking right now?” Derrick asked, taken aback. “I know you’re amazing, but can you not mess with me all the time?!”

“Do I look like such a petty person?” Emmeline’s eyes glimmered with a touch of mischief as she fluttered her lashes. “I said I’m going back to the detention center. Do you understand me?”

Derrick glanced helplessly at Benjamin, seeking support.

“Just listen to her,” Benjamin waved him off. “You worry too much.”

“Fine.” Derrick relented. “I’ll take you there and let them know to treat you well. You’ll be living more comfortably than in a hotel!”

“Good,” Emmeline nodded in satisfaction. “What’s most important here is to keep an eye on my sons and make sure they don’t slip up.”

“Everything has been arranged,” Benjamin assured her. “You don’t need to worry about that.”

Emmeline gave a small nod and then extended her hands toward Derrick.

“What is it, Boss?” he asked, confused.

“Cuff me!” she ordered, her annoyance rising. “Why do you keep asking such nonsensical questions? Do you want the Rykers to know everything about me?”

“Sorry,” Derrick apologized quickly, promptly reapplying the cuffs.

Oscar was admitted to the ICU and resuscitated, but the damage had been done. His internal organs were still bleeding from the lack of oxygen, and despite the hospital’s best efforts, his chances of survival were slim. The situation grew more dire as the hours passed.

It was already morning when Abel arrived at the hospital, his face a storm of fury. “Emmeline!” he growled through gritted teeth. “I’ll see you pay with your life for this.”

“Yeah,” Alana added, standing next to him, her voice dripping with disdain. “How could that woman do such a thing? To harm an old man like that?”

Adrien had also rushed over, his concern evident. “But what was her motive for attacking Grandad?” he asked, his brows furrowing. “It doesn’t make sense.”

Alana shot him a sharp look. “Are you trying to absolve her of her crimes, Adrien? She did it because she wants Abel to marry her instead of Wonder Doctor!”

“But Emmeline couldn’t possibly be with Abel!” Adrien denied quickly, shaking his head. “She birthed my sons. The one who should marry her is me!”

Alana snorted. “I say she’s a bearer of bad luck. You’d better not marry her, Adrien. She’s only going to curse her partners with bad luck!”

Abel nodded darkly. “She’s right. I was kind enough to let her stay here. To think she would harm Grandad!”

“Mommy isn’t a bad person!” came the childlike voices from the elevator. It was Helios, Endymion, and Hesperus.

“Helios!” Abel shouted, his anger flaring. “Who allowed you to come here?!”

“Mr. Butler said something happened last night,” Endymion explained, his face serious. “So, we came.”

“Mommy can’t be the killer!” Hesperus cried, his small voice full of conviction. “It’s a mistake!”

“What do you brats know?” Alana snapped, furious. “Everyone saw Emmeline suffocating Granddad with the towel!”

“Ms. Lane!” Adrien’s voice turned cold, his patience wearing thin. “What right do you have to yell at my children?”

Abel’s heart tightened as he watched his brother gather the triplets into his arms, protective and calm despite the chaos surrounding them.

Before the situation could escalate further, the dean hurried over to them. “Mr. Adrien, Mr. Abel! Mr. Oscar is not doing well. Please, ask Wonder Doctor for help.”

Abel’s brow furrowed at the mention of Wonder Doctor. He had expected this situation to get worse, and now it was clear: he needed her help.

“Luca,” Abel called for his assistant, his tone urgent. “Contact Mr. Benjamin. We need Wonder Doctor here.”

At that exact moment, Benjamin was giving Emmeline a massage in her solitary confinement when his phone rang. He picked it up, and Emmeline, catching the sound, grinned.

“There it is!” she said, her voice light.

Benjamin answered the call, and after a brief exchange, he hung up. “You were right, Ms. Emmeline!” he said, a hint of admiration in his voice.

“I told you so,” she said, popping an orange into her mouth. “He was hanging by a thread last night. He’s more dead than alive now, but they still need me.”

Benjamin, eager to help, asked, “Just tell me how I can get back to them, will you?”

“Tell them you can’t get in contact with me,” she instructed, her tone casual.

“…Is Mr. Oscar going to make it?” Benjamin asked.

“He’ll live!” Emmeline replied with a small, confident smile.

“Hell yeah!” Benjamin called Luca back.

Abel, on the other hand, was growing increasingly agitated. He couldn’t get in touch with Wonder Doctor, and time was running out. What was he supposed to do now?

Alana, standing nearby, couldn’t hide her smug smile. It seemed like Emmeline was done for. Wonder Doctor was gone, and the only woman Abel could marry now was her.

“Keep trying to contact her,” Abel barked. “I’ll have Wonder Doctor here even if I have to dig three feet into the ground and pay five million for a consultation!”

It was already midnight when Benjamin finally sighed after the eleventh call.

“What did Wonder Doctor say?” Abel asked, his voice tight with anxiety.

“Wonder Doctor is upset over a small matter.”

“A small matter?” Abel raised a brow, his patience thinning. “Leave it to me. I’ll arrange for someone to take care of it.”

“That would be for the best,” Benjamin agreed, his expression serious. “Wonder Doctor ran into three little boys crying at the hospital entrance today.”

Abel’s heart nearly stopped. “What do the boys look like?” he asked, his voice betraying a rare hint of fear.
