Chapter 73
Emmeline rushed to the pond, ready to dive in, when she heard a loud splash.
Someone had jumped in before her.
Without hesitation, she followed suit.
It didn’t matter if it was one of the triplets or Timothy who had fallen in—she loved them all equally, and she couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to them.
What was more concerning was that she hadn’t seen Hesperus near the pond. He was the most fragile of the children.
The pond was not very deep, but it was deeper than an adult’s height.
Just as Emmeline was about to dive under, she saw Abel surface, holding Hesperus in his arms.
“I’ve got him!” Abel said, spitting out some dirty water.
Emmeline swam toward him and helped support Hesperus, who was unconscious and limp in their arms.
“Star!” Emmeline cried, tears welling in her eyes. “Please be okay!”
“Someone call an ambulance!” Abel shouted to the people standing at the edge of the pond.
Adrien snapped to attention, quickly dialing emergency services.
Abel gently laid Hesperus at the edge of the pond and began performing CPR.
Emmeline held her son’s hand and applied pressure to a specific point, hoping to help him recover.
“Ugh!” Hesperus suddenly coughed and spat out dirty water, taking a shallow breath.
Emmeline breathed a sigh of relief, though she was still worried.
“Star!” She hugged the boy tightly. “You gave me such a fright! I’m so relieved you’re okay. What would I have done without you?”
Abel patted her on the shoulder. “He’s safe now. Don’t cry.”
But Emmeline cried harder, overwhelmed by the relief. She turned to Abel and hugged him. “Thank you for saving Star! I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.”
“Everything’s fine now. Don’t cry,” Abel said softly, holding her with one arm and offering comfort.
“Ahem!” Adrien’s voice cut through the moment as he cleared his throat behind Abel. “Can you keep some distance, please?”
Emmeline glared at him. “What did you say? Abel saved your son, and that’s all you have to say? As Star’s father, where were you when he needed help?”
“I…” Adrien stumbled over his words, knowing he hadn’t even considered jumping in.
“Thanks, Abel,” he mumbled.
“Don’t mention it. I just acted on instinct,” Abel replied with a shrug.
Adrien scratched his head, wondering why he hadn’t felt that same instinct earlier.
After everything settled down, Hesperus was placed in a hospital bed, and Julianna rushed in to see him.
“Oh, my dear grandson, you gave me such a fright!” she exclaimed, wiping tears away. “I was so afraid I might lose you. I’m so relieved you’re alright.”
Landen, who was also present, looked concerned. “How did Star end up in the pond? There are no security cameras in the garden, so we can’t investigate what happened.”
“The boys were just playing around. It was an accident,” Emmeline explained, trying to ease the tension.
She had overheard Timothy say it wasn’t intentional, and she believed he must have accidentally pushed Hesperus into the water.
Emmeline didn’t blame Timothy. Despite being Alana’s child, she cared for him just as much as the triplets.
Julianna, however, didn’t seem so understanding. “But I heard Timothy say he shoved my dear Star into the pond.”
Abel’s face turned pale for a moment before he quickly regained his composure.
“You can’t blame Timothy, madam. And remember, Abel was the one who saved Star,” Emmeline said, standing firm.
“Hmph! Someone must be jealous that I have three grandsons,” Julianna muttered, eyeing Abel suspiciously.
