Chapter 32
The receptionist burst into laughter, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Ha! You? A delivery person, trying to meet with our Chief Executive Officer? He’s the most adored man in Struyria. Are you… interested in him?”
Emmeline sighed, trying not to let the receptionist’s condescending attitude get under her skin. “Y-Yes… I think about him every day,” she replied, playing along.
She didn’t want to waste any more time with the rude receptionist, so she quickly pulled out her phone and dialed Benjamin’s number. “I need you to come down here, now,” she demanded.
The receptionist raised an eyebrow at Emmeline’s phone call. “Who are you calling? Your acting skills are impressive, but didn’t I tell you to wait outside? Do you not understand what I’m saying?”
“Sure, sure,” Emmeline replied, repeating the word three times before she turned to walk out of the lobby.
But just as she was about to leave, Benjamin’s voice called out from behind her. “Ms. Louise!”
Emmeline turned to look at him, nodding sharply in acknowledgment. “Benjamin, how do you train your receptionists? Are you trying to destroy our company by hiring people like her?”
The receptionist froze, stunned by Emmeline’s words.
What… did she just say?
Benjamin hurried over to Emmeline, his face pale at her comment. “She’s new, Ms. Louise. She seems to be under the impression that she can act however she wants now that she’s working at Adelmar Group. I’ll handle this right away.”
“I suggest you fire her immediately,” Emmeline said sternly. “Why should delivery people be treated poorly? Everyone deserves respect, no matter their job.”
With a firm hand, Emmeline removed her helmet, her expression serious. The receptionist’s face turned white as a sheet, and she collapsed to the floor, shocked by Emmeline’s authority and the realization of who she was speaking to.
Is this woman the owner of Adelmar Group?
When Emmeline arrived at the ninetieth floor of the Adelmar Group building, she was greeted by the sight of a distinguished older man sitting in her office. Her eyes welled up with emotion as she saw him. “Master Robert, you’re here?”
“Yes, I’ve come with Waylon; he wanted to take a look around the company,” Robert said warmly, his gaze full of affection.
“I should’ve known you’d be here waiting for me if I had known about your visit. You tricked me!” Emmeline playfully scolded him.
Robert chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “Ha, ha, ha! You’re a mother of three, but you still act like a child.”
Emmeline pouted, a touch of disappointment in her voice. “The triplets would have loved to see their grandpa.”
“My schedule is tight during this visit,” Robert replied. “I can’t see them this time, unfortunately. I’m already booked for my return flight.”
Emmeline’s expression softened. “What a pity,” she muttered.
Five years ago, when the Louise family had turned their backs on her, Emmeline had been devastated after giving birth to her children. It was Robert who had saved her life then, and for that, she would always be grateful. She had gone with him to Reykjavik, where she spent four years learning valuable skills, eventually inheriting the Adelmar Group. Robert and Waylon were the ones who had given her a second chance.
Robert smiled, reaching into his bag. “I brought something for you—a special Five-Elements Needle. It has the properties of gold, wood, water, fire, and earth. It’s twice as effective as regular needles.”
Emmeline’s face lit up with gratitude. “Thank you so much, Master Robert!” She took the needle, holding it close. The Five-Elements Needle was one of Robert’s specialties, and its use would significantly improve her medical skills.
After leaving the Adelmar building, Emmeline rode her electric bicycle back home. However, she realized she had forgotten her helmet in the office. Benjamin, busy seeing Robert and Waylon off to the airport, hadn’t noticed either.
She sighed but didn’t think much of it. The distance wasn’t far, and she figured she would be fine as long as she wasn’t caught by any patrolling traffic police.
But as fate would have it, just as she was stopped at a traffic light, a police car pulled up next to her.
One of the officers immediately got out, frowning at her. “How can you be riding without a helmet? Don’t you know how important safety is? Haven’t we been promoting safety awareness?”
“Sir, I swear this is the first time I’ve ever forgotten my helmet!” Emmeline pleaded, trying to explain.
“First time? No one will believe you,” the officer scoffed, eyeing her old electric bicycle with suspicion. “Seems like you’re always hoping you won’t get caught.”
“Please, listen to me…” Emmeline started, but before she could say more, a sleek luxury car pulled over beside them.
A well-dressed man stepped out of the car, his presence commanding attention. “Em, what’s going on?” he asked, his voice filled with concern.
Emmeline froze, her heart skipping a beat when she saw him. “Adrien?” she muttered under her breath, surprised and confused.
Why is he here?
