Chapter 7
Abel rushed to the hospital to find his grandfather, Oscar, in critical condition. Rosaline and Lewis were already there, along with Landen, his uncle. The atmosphere was tense, and everyone could only pray that Oscar would survive.
“Lewis,” Landen said urgently, “Why don’t you call your contact again and plead with the Wonder Doctor? Our father’s life depends on it!”
“They’ve tried three times already,” Lewis replied, frustration seeping through his voice. “We even offered 50 million, but he hung up on us.”
“Try again! We need him. They have to find a way,” Landen insisted.
As the family anxiously waited, a bodyguard came running in with exciting news. “The Wonder Doctor is coming! He’s on the elevator right now!”
Everyone’s spirits lifted instantly. They rushed out to the elevator, eager to meet the famous healer.
When the elevator door opened, Emmeline stepped out, dressed in a full protective suit and face mask, and was immediately met with curious stares. The Ryker family didn’t recognize her, and Emmeline was grateful for that. The assistant behind her gasped as he took in the scene, and both Lewis and Landen quickly bowed.
“You’re finally here, Wonder Doctor!” Landen said, relief flooding his voice.
Emmeline didn’t respond with much more than a nod. She simply walked past the family and toward Oscar’s ward. She wasn’t there for the Ryker family’s gratitude—she was there for the 50 million and the chance to save a life.
As Emmeline made her way to the ward, Rosaline’s eyes lingered on her. “That doctor’s eyes… they seem familiar.”
“What?” Abel asked, turning to his mother.
“This doctor… those eyes,” Rosaline muttered, but she was interrupted as the rest of the family hurried inside to follow Emmeline.
Abel, too, felt something strange about the doctor but couldn’t quite place it. He watched as Emmeline and Benjamin entered the ward, and the hospital director stepped forward to block the family from entering.
“Only the doctor and his assistant are allowed in,” the director said firmly.
The Ryker family had no choice but to wait outside, their nerves frayed as the minutes stretched on. After two long hours, Emmeline and Benjamin emerged from the ward, and the anxious family rushed to meet them.
“How’s my father, doctor?” Lewis asked, his voice shaky with hope.
“Is he awake?” Rosaline asked, her tone desperate.
Benjamin stepped forward, blocking their path. “You can see for yourselves. The Wonder Doctor is tired, and we’ll be leaving now.”
Abel, eager to show his gratitude, said, “Let me at least escort the doctor out.”
“That won’t be necessary,” Emmeline replied coolly, her eyes meeting his for a brief, electric moment before she turned away.
The look in her eyes stopped Abel in his tracks. His heart skipped a beat. He knew those eyes.
“Doctor!” he called, suddenly rushing after her.
But before he could reach her, the elevator door closed, and Emmeline and Benjamin were gone.
Confused and unsettled, Abel returned to the ward. To his relief, Oscar was awake and in good spirits.
“Granddad, how are you feeling?” Abel asked, his voice full of joy.
“Leave,” Oscar said, waving his hand dismissively. “I want to talk to Abel alone.”
The family, as expected, obeyed. Rosaline was the last to leave, closing the door behind her.
Outside, Landen’s wife, Julianna, looked unhappy as she watched her sons.
Abel sat at his grandfather’s bedside, concern on his face. “What is it, Granddad? What do you need?”
Oscar held up his left hand, his thumb and index finger lightly touching.
“Do you see it?” Oscar asked.
Abel leaned in closer, his frown deepening. “I don’t see anything. What’s going on?”
“It’s a needle,” Oscar said, his voice filled with amusement.
Abel looked again, and this time, he could see a faint outline of a needle between his grandfather’s fingers. “What’s the deal with this needle?”
“The Wonder Doctor dropped it,” Oscar explained. “Her skills are incredible—after just a few needles, I felt like I was cured! But this little thing slipped through her fingers.”
Abel examined the needle, intrigued. “I guess even the best doctors make mistakes.”
Oscar grinned. “That doctor is a keeper, Abel. Find her and make her your wife.”
Abel nearly choked on his own breath. “What? Are you serious, Granddad?”
Oscar’s face grew serious. “She saved my life, and she’s a young woman with exceptional skills. I want her in the family. She’ll make our bloodline even stronger.”
Abel stammered, “But… I’m not interested in men, Granddad. The Wonder Doctor is a man, right?”
Oscar laughed, shaking his head. “Foolish boy! The doctor is a woman, a beautiful woman! How could you be so dense? I’ve seen enough people in my life to know—her eyes tell me everything.”
Abel felt a strange sense of clarity begin to form. “Her eyes?”
“Yes! You saw it too, didn’t you? Her eyes—so captivating, so mysterious. That’s no ordinary woman. You need to marry her, Abel.”
Abel was left speechless, his mind whirling. His grandfather’s insistence was unlike anything he had ever experienced. He had no interest in marriage, especially with a stranger, but Oscar’s words rang in his ears.
“What are you waiting for? Go and find her!” Oscar urged.
Before Abel could respond, his mind was spinning, and his world had just been turned upside down.
Back at the Ryker family mansion, Rosaline was greeted at the door by Alana, who had come to visit her son, Thomas. The children were playing outside in the garden, laughing and bonding.
Thomas, however, had a melancholic look on his face as he watched his friends play. “Do you think your mommy loves you?” he asked with a sad glint in his eyes.
Helios, Endymion, and Hesperus looked at him with confusion.
“Of course she does,” Helios said, his voice filled with warmth.
“Yeah, what kind of question is that?” Endymion added.
Thomas sighed deeply. “You don’t understand. My mommy doesn’t love me…”
The others were silent for a moment, realizing the sadness in Thomas’s words.
“It’s because of Alana, right?” Hesperus deduced.
Thomas nodded sadly. “She’s scary. I don’t think she loves me.”
Timothy, the youngest, joined in, clapping his hands. “We have the best mommy in the world! She’s the most beautiful woman ever!”
“Maybe we can introduce you to our mommy one day?” Endymion suggested.
“Yes, please!” Timothy cheered, his excitement contagious.
As the children continued to play, the butler arrived, calling for Timothy. “Your mother is here to see you, Timothy!”
Thomas’s heart sank. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to see her, but the reality of his situation was clear—he had to face Alana once more.
