Chapter 89

As soon as Emmeline put her phone away, Abel’s phone rang. It was Benjamin.

“The Wonder Doctor has accepted your invitation,” Benjamin said, his voice steady, “but she can’t guarantee she’ll be able to do anything about the blood disorder.”

“As long as she’s willing to try,” Abel replied without hesitation. “I won’t give up hope. You can name your price!”

“Don’t worry about the consultation fee,” Benjamin said, his tone softening.

“No,” Abel insisted, his voice firm. “I’ll give up my entire fortune if it means the boy can be saved!”

Benjamin was moved by the sincerity in Abel’s voice. “Alright, Mr. Ryker. I’ll make the necessary arrangements.”

When Emmeline saw Abel end the call, she discreetly pinched a spot on her body. Then, she covered her forehead with her hand and feigned weakness. “Abel, I’m feeling dizzy.”

Concern flickered in Abel’s eyes. “What happened, Emma?”

“I…” Emmeline’s voice trailed off as her eyes glazed over. Before she could finish, she fainted and collapsed into Abel’s arms.

Daisy quickly noticed. “She must be exhausted. You should take her to the doctor.”

Luca, standing nearby, added, “We’re already in the pediatric department.”

Without hesitation, Abel scooped Emmeline into his arms and rushed her to the outpatient department.

About fifteen minutes later, Emmeline woke up in a small observation room. The soft beeping of machines filled the air.

“I’m fine now. You should go and check on Star,” Emmeline said, trying to sit up.

Abel knelt beside her, still looking concerned. “Uncle Landen and Aunt Julianna are with him. I’m more worried about you.”

“I’m worried about Star!” Emmeline’s voice cracked, and tears began to fall. “Why must Star suffer? It’s not enough that he has a blood disorder, but his father is unreliable too!”

“Don’t worry,” Abel said, gently wiping her tears. “I’m here for you. The Wonder Doctor will be here soon. Maybe she has a way to save Star.”

“You should wait for her in the pediatric department,” Emmeline said, gently pushing him away. “I’ll join you once I feel better.”

“I’ll stay with Ms. Louise,” Daisy said kindly. “You should go to Star.”

Abel nodded and kissed Emmeline’s forehead. “Rest well, and leave Star to me.”

Emmeline pressed her lips together and nodded, though tears continued to fill her eyes. She felt torn between her own suffering and the desperate need to save her son.

Once Abel left, Emmeline quietly removed her intravenous drip and snuck out of the back window. She quickly met Benjamin in the parking lot.

“Ms. Louise, don’t you think this is all a bit much? You could just reveal your identity,” Benjamin said with a frown.

“You must be joking!” Emmeline chuckled softly. “If everyone knew who I was, it would be even harder to focus. I wouldn’t have time to research my medicine!”

Benjamin raised an eyebrow. “That’s true. Keeping your identity hidden does give you more freedom.”

“Exactly,” Emmeline agreed. “Besides, the Wonder Doctor is just a title. Who knows? Master Robert might have to step in one day. If I reveal myself, Master Robert won’t be able to work in public anymore.”

“Is that why Master Robert created this persona for you?”

Emmeline nodded. “Yes. The Wonder Doctor will never be exposed.”

Benjamin handed her a protective suit. “Enough talk. Put this on quickly. It’s almost time to meet Mr. Ryker.”

The two of them got ready and made their way to the pediatric ward. Landen and Julianna were standing by the door, while Abel was sitting beside Hesperus’ bed, comforting the boy. Helios and Endymion were also there.

“The doctor will be here soon, Star. You’re a brave boy. Nothing is too difficult for you,” Abel said, gently brushing Hesperus’ forehead.

“Yes, Star,” Helios added. “Moon and I are waiting for you to get better.”

“We’re all Mommy’s favorite children,” Endymion chimed in. “You have to get better. Nothing will tear us apart!”

Hesperus pouted and reached for Abel’s hand. “But Daddy, is Mommy feeling better?”

“Mommy is resting now,” Abel said softly, kissing Hesperus’ hand. “Once she’s better, she’ll be right by your side.”

Tears welled up in Hesperus’ eyes. “Thank you for always cheering me up, Daddy. You should’ve been my real Daddy.”

Abel’s throat tightened at Hesperus’ words. The simple, innocent honesty of the boy left him speechless. He held the three boys close, not knowing what to say, but the weight of the moment was heavy on his heart.
