Chapter 55
“Calm down,” Abel said, his tone calm and collected. “You drank too much yesterday. I picked you up from Ethan’s house.”
Emmeline frowned, feeling something was off. “So… you didn’t go back last night?”
“I’m a tenant here,” Abel replied nonchalantly. “The rent isn’t due yet. I have the right to stay. I can also take care of you.”
Emmeline scratched her head, feeling embarrassed as the events of yesterday slowly came back to her. She had been so determined to teach Abel a lesson, but somehow, she had ended up bringing him home.
Abel handed her the convenience bags. “Daisy went to buy vegetables. I was worried you’d have nothing to eat when you woke up, so I got you breakfast.”
Emmeline stared at the bags, speechless. “You know how to buy breakfast?”
“I had the hotel prepare it and deliver it,” Abel explained. “I just went out to pick it up.”
Emmeline took the convenience bags and went to the dining room. She opened them to find several lunch boxes inside, filled with a variety of food from the hotel. It seemed like Abel had really gone out of his way.
“I don’t know if you like it or not,” Abel said, his voice slightly softer now. “Just eat.”
Emmeline rubbed her stomach, feeling a hunger she hadn’t noticed until now. “I’m starving,” she admitted, her stomach growling at the sight of the food. After all the vomiting yesterday, her stomach was empty, and the delicious spread made her feel even hungrier.
She went to the bathroom to wash up quickly and returned to the table. Just as she was about to pick up her fork, she dialed the kindergarten’s number.
The teacher answered, but it was Helios who picked up the phone.
“Don’t worry, Mommy. We’re staying at Adrien’s house now. We want to help you investigate him and his mother,” he said seriously.
Emmeline couldn’t help but laugh. “But why do you want to investigate him?”
“Although Adrien is our father, if he’s not qualified, we won’t accept him as our daddy,” Helios replied with an air of maturity that was beyond his years.
“What if he is qualified?” Emmeline asked, a little amused.
“Then you can accept him,” Helios said, as if it was the most logical thing in the world. “After all, we are a family.”
Emmeline was silent for a moment, touched by her son’s thoughtful words. Just hearing Helios’s perspective made her feel a little lighter.
“Okay, I’ll let you handle the investigation,” she said with a small smile.
“Goodbye, Mommy!” Helios’s cheerful voice came through before he hung up.
Emmeline sighed softly, grateful that her children were okay. Just as she was about to turn off her phone and enjoy her breakfast, a headline on the screen caught her attention.
“Abel Ryker, president of Ryker Group, publicly states that Alana Lane’s pregnancy has nothing to do with him.”
Emmeline scowled as she read the article, her anger flaring. “Abel, you’re so shameless! Why don’t you admit what you’ve done?”
Abel, who had been eating pasta across from her, froze for a moment at her words. Then, he raised his eyes and gave her a disdainful look. “Although I have no lover, I never lack women. Do you think I need to act like a rascal?”
Emmeline’s mind raced, her fingers tapping the table as she considered his words. “Alana won’t be so stupid as to claim you’re the father of the child if you never slept with her. So why didn’t she just say it was Luca’s child instead?”
Abel paused, clearly surprised at her mention of Luca. Why does Emma always bring up Luca in these situations? he thought.
“How should I know why Alana said I got her pregnant?” Abel shrugged. “I’m as puzzled as you are.”
Emmeline sat back, making an assumption based on her own reasoning. “Just think about it. Even if Alana’s child isn’t yours, she’s certain you’ve been with her. Otherwise, she wouldn’t dare to claim you’re the father. She wouldn’t say it’s Luca’s child, because Luca’s never touched her.”
Abel raised an eyebrow. “Needless to say,” he replied, picking up his fork again. “The truth will come out when Alana gives birth.”
Emmeline leaned forward, her gaze intense as she stared into his eyes. “Abel,” she asked quietly, “Should I trust you?”
