“You should’ve changed a long time ago!” Abel roared, his anger flaring. “Have you ever considered Hesperus’ feelings? He barely escaped death!”
“I know you saved Hesperus!” Adrien shouted back, his voice equally loud. “Are you saying my son would’ve died if you hadn’t saved him? Fine! I owe you one, then! Are you happy now?”
“This is ridiculous! You haven’t changed at all!” Abel retorted coldly.
“Enough!” An icy voice interrupted them. “You two are cousins. Why are you bickering over a woman?”
Emmeline, Abel, and Adrien turned toward the door. Adam stood there, flanked by bodyguards.
Abel narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean, Adam?”
“I’m talking about this woman,” Adam said, pointing at Emmeline. “It’s your duty to save the child because he has Ryker family blood. But the woman? Don’t tear each other apart over her. No man from the Ryker family is ever lacking attention from women.”
Abel immediately stepped in front of Emmeline, shielding her. “You’re talking about yourself and Adrien, right?”
Adam scoffed. “Abel, the rumors say you don’t like getting close to women, and Timothy was a result of someone’s trap. I didn’t expect you to fight over a woman as eagerly as Adrien.”
Abel chuckled darkly. “Is that all you came here to say?”
“Of course not,” Adam said. “Grandfather wants to host a party to celebrate his great-grandson’s recovery. I’m here to inform you two.”
Abel and Adrien both froze, surprised by the sudden announcement. Emmeline was equally stunned.
Oscar wants to host a party to celebrate Star’s recovery? That’s… sudden.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Emmeline said cautiously. “Star is still young, and it doesn’t seem appropriate to throw a party for him.”
Adam glanced at her, his eyes narrowing. “Are you in charge here?” he asked, his voice cold. He turned back to Abel and Adrien. “Tomorrow night, at Ryker Mansion. Got it?”
Without waiting for a response, Adam turned and left, followed by Adrien.
Emmeline exhaled, trying to shake off the tension. “Um… I’ll bring some formal clothes for you and the children to the café,” Abel said softly.
Emmeline nodded. “Mm. Sorry for troubling you.”
Abel gently cupped her face in his hands, placing a soft kiss on her forehead before he left the room. Emmeline pressed her lips together, a hint of embarrassment flushing her cheeks, even though no one was looking.
Once alone, she quickly grabbed her phone and sent a message to Benjamin. A short while later, he arrived at the ward, carrying a fresh fruit cake.
“If you have anything to say, you could just call me, right?” Emmeline said as she took the cake from him.
“Don’t worry. The Ryker family knows I’m here on Ethan’s behalf,” Benjamin assured her.
Emmeline furrowed her brow. “I still think it’s not appropriate. The Adelmar Group will be affected if my identity is exposed.”
“They wouldn’t think it’s related to Mr. Adelmar. If it comes down to it, I’ll just admit I’m your secret admirer. No one will think much of it!” Benjamin grinned.
“Benjamin!” Emmeline shot him an annoyed look. “I knew you were waiting for the chance to say that!”
“Shh!” Benjamin whispered. “Star is sleeping! Careful not to wake him!”
Emmeline rolled her eyes, but then her expression grew serious. “Anyway, back to business. I think there’s more to this party than meets the eye.”
Benjamin nodded thoughtfully. “I’ve considered that. I’ll bring Ethan and a few bodyguards. We’ll be there to give Star a present. You don’t need to worry.”
“Daisy, too,” Emmeline added. “I’ll have her keep an eye on Star.”
“Mm. Abel will also protect you. There shouldn’t be anything to worry about,” Benjamin reassured her.
Emmeline sighed. “Troubles never left me ever since I got involved with the Ryker family, but I can’t seem to stay away either.”
Benjamin smiled softly. “At least Star is okay now. If you want to extricate yourself completely, I’ll be waiting for you at the Adelmar Group.”
“It’s not time yet. I’ll have to wait and see,” Emmeline replied, her tone firm.
Benjamin walked up to her, his gaze searching her face. “Emma, have you really fallen in love with Abel?”
